What information on species is available through the Data Zone?

Ben Lascelles
More and more continental species, such as Eurasian Curlew are becoming threatened.

For all Globally Threatened (those species listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable and Extinct in the Wild) Near Threatened and Data Deficient birds, their species factsheets contain information on range and population, ecology, threats, conservation measures underway and conservation measures proposed (as appropriate). A second page of additional data tables is available for all these species giving the IUCN Red List criteria under which the species qualifies, the history of categories assigned to it in assessments since 1988, details of its range, population size and population trend, distribution details for each country it occurs in, habitat preferences, altitude, and the threats facing the species and their potential impact.

For Extinct species, the factsheets contain a summary account of their historic range, their ecology and the threats that drove them extinct, plus additional data tables for IUCN Red List history since 1988, country distribution, and habitat.

The factsheets for species in any of the categories listed above were all comprehensively updated and sent for external review in 2007-2008. They incorporate (as far as possible) published and unpublished information received up to February 2008. The conservation measures proposed were reviewed in 2004 and updated in 2007-2008 based on the current pertinent threats to, or research priorities for, each species.

For all c.8,000 species evaluated as Least Concern, the factsheets give a justification for their evaluation as Least Concern including a summary of the range size, population size and trend information where known. The summary is in many cases a preliminary (and incomplete) collation of available material, and will be expanded in due course. The additional data tables give the IUCN Red List history, country distribution and habitat preferences. Country distribution has been collated from various sources, including, in particular, the database held by UNEP: WCMC. Habitat preferences have also been collated from a range of sources including regional field guides and bird family handbooks, plus Stotz et al. (1996) for Neotropical species.

BirdLife would be grateful to receive updated information or correction of any errors in the species factsheets and additional data tables: please click the link at the end of each factsheet to email your comments/corrections.
